Secretary General of the European Parliament

Klaus Welle holds a degree in economics from the University of Witten/Herdecke, Germany. He was a recipient of grants from the Students’ Foundation of the German People and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, student sponsorship from the Westdeutsche Landesbank.

Professional experience

  • 1984 – 1986 : Banking studies, Westdeutsche Landesbank, Münster
  • 1986 – 1987 : Military service with the Luftwaffe
  • 1991 – 1994 : Head of the European and Foreign Policy Department at the CDU Central Office, Bonn
  • 1994 – 1999 : Secretary-General of the European People’s Party (EPP) and the European Union of Christian Democrats (EUCD), Brussels
  • 1999 – 2003 : Secretary-General of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, Brussels
  • 2004 – 2007 : Director-General for Internal Policies, European Parliament, Brussels
  • 2007 – 2009 : Head of the Cabinet of the President of the European Parliament, Brussels
  • Since 15 March 2009 : Secretary-General of the European Parliament, Luxembourg
